Malediven-Anemonenfisch (Amphiprion nigripes) & Prachtanemone (Heteractis magnifica)

An der Decke einer kleinen Höhle wuchs diese kleine Prachtanemone. In ihr lebte ein einzelner Malediven Anemonenfisch. Die Anemone wirkt, als ob sie aus dem Stein herausschießen würde. Das Fisheye Objektiv verstärkt diesen Eindruck noch.

This small magnificent anemone grew on the ceiling of a small cave. A single maldive clownfish lived inside her. The anemone looks as if it would explode out of the stone. The fisheye lens reinforces this impression.

Am Ende des Tauchgangs am Kuda Giri Wreck, Süd Male Atoll, erwartete uns ein riesiges Feld mit Anemonen und dazugehörigen Bewohnern.

At the end of the dive at the Kuda Giri Wreck, South Male Atoll, a huge field with anemones and their inhabitants awaited us.

Der erste Makro Tauchgang auf den Malediven mit komplett neuem Makro Equipment ging an das Kuda Giri Wreck im Süd Male Atoll. Ein perfekter Tauchgang, um sich mit dem neuen Set-Up bekannt zu machen. Eine gebänderte Scherengarnele war für mich ein tolles Testsubjekt. Beim Sichten der Fotos fiel mir die Putzergarnele von "Findet Nemo" (2003) ein. Daher auch der Name des Bildes.

For the first macro dive in the Maldives, with completely new macro equipment, we went to the Kuda Giri Wreck, South Male Atoll. A perfect dive to get acquainted with the new set-up. A banded cleaner shrimp was a great test subject for me. Looking through the photos I thought of the cleaner shrimp from "Finding Nemo" (2003). Hence the name of the picture.

Am Tag unserer Ankunft in Vancouver besuchten wir den Stanley Park. Als die Sonne unterging, waren wir etwa bei der Hälfte des Parks. Als die Sonne die Wolkendecke durchbrach, bot sich uns eine unglaubliche Szenerie. Dutzende Möwen flogen schreiend über unsere Köpfe hinweg, als die untergehende Sonne alles orange färbte. Die gigantischen Öltanker im Hafen vervollständigten das surreale Bild. Diese Aufnahme war der Versuch, diesen Ort zu dieser Zeit festzuhalten.

On the day we arrived in Vancouver we visited Stanley Park. When the sun went down we were about halfway through the park. As the sun broke through the clouds, the scenery was incredible. Dozens of seagulls flew screeching overhead as the setting sun turned everything orange. The gigantic oil tankers in the harbor completed the surreal picture. This image was an attempt to capture this place at that time.

Orange-finger Coral Crab (Cymo barunae)

Korallenkrabben sind besonders schwer zu fotografieren, vor allem bei Nacht. Die scharfen Spitzen, Schatten von Lampen und ein unbrauchbarer Autofokus machen einem das Leben schwer. Bei starker Strömung und einem Nachttauchgang ist es noch komplexer. Nach dem Tauchgang war ich sehr froh ein ganz gutes Bild einer jungen Orangefinger Korallenkrabbe zu haben.

Coral crabs are particularly difficult to photograph, especially at night. The sharp tips, lamp shadows and unusable autofocus make life difficult. With strong currents and a night dive, it's even more complex. After the dive I was very happy to have a pretty good picture of a young orange finger coral crab.

Seit Jahren jage ich dieses Bild quer über den Planeten. Manchmal waren wir zu spät, manchmal zu früh und meistens am falschen Ort zur falschen Zeit. Auf den Malediven wurde der Traum endlich war. Aus insgesamt 900 Bildern (ca. 50GB Daten) gab es eines, welches ich immer schon machen wollte.

I've been chasing this image across the planet for years. Sometimes we were late, sometimes early, and mostly in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the Maldives, the dream finally came true. From a total of 900 pictures (approx. 50GB of data) there was one that I always wanted to make.

Die Malediven sind für Tauchgänge mit starken Strömungen bekannt. Kandu (Dhivehi für die Kanäle zwischen den Inseln, Riffen und Atollen) Tauchgänge mit Riffhaken sind wie ein Unterwasserkino. Gewaltige Fischschwärme, große Schulen von Grauen Riffhaien und kleinere Gruppen Adlerrochen ziehen anmutig an einem vorbei. Man selbst fühlt sich in den Gezeitenströumgen machtlos, die Tiere nutzen sie zu ihrem Vorteil. Nach 20 Minuten war die Vorstellung vorbei und wir mussten leider wieder auftauchen.

The Maldives are known for diving with strong currents. Kandu (Dhivehi for the channels between islands, reefs and atolls) dives with the help of reef hooks, are like an underwater cinema. Huge schools of fish & gray reef sharks and smaller groups of eagle rays gracefully pass by. You feel powerless in the tidal currents, but the animals use them to their advantage. After 20 minutes the performance was over and unfortunately we had to ascend to the surface again.
