Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus)

Seit Jahren jage ich dieses Bild quer über den Planeten. Manchmal waren wir zu spät, manchmal zu früh und meistens am falschen Ort zur falschen Zeit. Auf den Malediven wurde der Traum endlich war. Aus insgesamt 900 Bildern (ca. 50GB Daten) gab es eines, welches ich immer schon machen wollte.

I've been chasing this image across the planet for years. Sometimes we were late, sometimes early, and mostly in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the Maldives, the dream finally came true. From a total of 900 pictures (approx. 50GB of data) there was one that I always wanted to make.

Die Malediven sind für Tauchgänge mit starken Strömungen bekannt. Kandu (Dhivehi für die Kanäle zwischen den Inseln, Riffen und Atollen) Tauchgänge mit Riffhaken sind wie ein Unterwasserkino. Gewaltige Fischschwärme, große Schulen von Grauen Riffhaien und kleinere Gruppen Adlerrochen ziehen anmutig an einem vorbei. Man selbst fühlt sich in den Gezeitenströumgen machtlos, die Tiere nutzen sie zu ihrem Vorteil. Nach 20 Minuten war die Vorstellung vorbei und wir mussten leider wieder auftauchen.

The Maldives are known for diving with strong currents. Kandu (Dhivehi for the channels between islands, reefs and atolls) dives with the help of reef hooks, are like an underwater cinema. Huge schools of fish & gray reef sharks and smaller groups of eagle rays gracefully pass by. You feel powerless in the tidal currents, but the animals use them to their advantage. After 20 minutes the performance was over and unfortunately we had to ascend to the surface again.

Das erste Bild einer Ilford HP5 Rolle im Zoo Hellbrunn, Salzburg. Das Jahr 2022 neigt sich dem Ende zu und die ersten Vorsätze für das Jahr 2023 sind schon geschrieben. Allen ein frohes neues Jahr. Vielleicht können wir 2023 beginnen uns zu retten.

The first image of an Ilford HP5 roll at Hellbrunn Zoo, Salzburg. The year 2022 is coming to an end and the first resolutions for the year 2023 have already been written. Happy New Year everyone. Maybe in 2023 we can start to save ourselves.

Im Andasibe-Mantadia National Park gab es für uns den letzten Night-Walk der Reise. Bei Temperaturen um die 10 Grad und leichtem Nieselregen, gin es also los. Nach einigen schlafenden Chamäleons und wundersamen Insekten, entdeckte unser Guide einen jungen Grünen Glanzaugenfrosch. Nachdem wir wieder zurück in Wien waren, hatte ich auf das Bild komplett vergessen. Zufällig fiel es mir Jahre später bei einer weiteren Sichtung in die Hände. Seitdem ist es eines meiner Lieblingsbilder.

In the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park we had the last night walk of the trip. With temperatures around 10 degrees and light drizzle, we started the walk. After some sleeping chameleons and out-of.this-world-looking insects, our guide spotted a young green bright eyed frog. After we were back in Vienna, I had completely forgotten about the picture. It happened to fall into my hands years later during another sighting. It's been one of my favorite pictures ever since.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

An einem kalten Morgen bestiegen wir in Fianarantsoa einen alten, ausgemusterten schweizer Zug. Unser Ziel war die Stadt Manakara an der Ostküste Madagaskars. Die Fahrt dauert irgendetwas zwischen 8 und 15 Stunden, man weiß es im Vorhinein nie. Mit uns im Wagon war, unter anderem, auch eine junge Familie aus Südtirol, Italien. Alle Mitreisenden verliebten sich schlagartig in den kleinen Sohn der Familie. Er turnte durch den gesamten Wagon und freute sich über jeden Tunnel auf der Strecke. Das Bild ist einer der Momente, als der Zug einen Tunnel passierte und das erste Licht auf den Jungen fiel. 15 Stunden später kamen wir dann alle erschöpft aber voller Vorfreude am Meer an.

On a cold morning we boarded an old, decommissioned Swiss train in Fianarantsoa. Our destination was the city of Manakara on the east coast of Madagascar. The journey takes anywhere from 8 to 15 hours, you never know in advance. With us in the wagon was, among others, a young family from South Tyrol, Italy. All fellow travelers fell in love with their young son. He jumped through the entire wagon and was happy about every tunnel on the route. The picture is one of the moments when the train passed through a tunnel and the first light fell on the boy. 15 hours later we all arrived exhausted but full of anticipation at the sea.

Das Foto entstand am Weg zum Isalo Nationalpark. Schon von weitem konnte man die riesigen Rauchschwaden am Himmel erkennen. Aufgrund der mangelnden Regenfälle in dem Gebiet, war die Vegetation komplett ausgetrocknet. Während der Reise gab es immer wieder Buschfeuer, aber keines in diesem Ausmaß. Unser Fahrer parkte das Auto mitten auf der Straße und ich fotografierte die Szenerie direkt durch die Scheibe. Währenddessen rannte ein Mann direkt auf die lodernden Flammen zu. Die Greifvögel in der Luft versuchten die aufgeschreckten Insekten und kleineren Vögel zu fangen. Das gesamte Schauspiel war durch die Hitze und den Rauch in einen gespenstischen Schleier gehüllt.

The photo was taken on the way to Isalo National Park. You could see huge clouds of smoke in the sky from afar. Due to the lack of rainfall in the area, the vegetation had completely dried up. During the whole trip there were repeated bushfires, but none this big. Our driver stopped the car in the middle of the road and I took pictures right through the window. Meanwhile, a man ran straight toward the blazing flames. Some birds of prey tried to catch the startled insects and smaller birds in the air. The entire spectacle was shrouded in an eerie haze from the heat and smoke.

Parson's chameleon (Calumma parsonii)

Am Ende unserer Reise durch Madagaskar, besuchten wir noch das Réserve Peyrieras. Dieser kleine Naturpark, gegründet vom französischen Insektenkundler und Naturkundler André Peyriéras (* 1927), beherbergt eine große Anzahl Reptilien, Amphibien, Insekten und Lemuren.
Im großen, begehbaren Gehege, gab es die Möglichkeit allerlei Arten von Chamäleons zu beobachten und fotografieren. Dieses Parson’s Chamäleon war besonders neugierig.

At the end of our trip through Madagascar, we visited the Réserve Peyrieras. This small natural park, founded by French entomologist and naturalist André Peyriéras (b. 1927), is home to a large number of reptiles, amphibians, insects and lemurs.
In the large, walk-in enclosure, there was an opportunity to observe and photograph all kinds of chameleons. This Parson's chameleon was particularly curious.

Panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis)

Bevor wir unser Tauchabenteuer auf der Insel Réunion begannen, beschlossen wir, die Fauna und Flora über Wasser ein wenig zu entdecken. Auf einer unserer ersten Ausflüge besuchten wir einen botanischen Garten, namens Jardin d’Eden. Natürlich waren wir auf der Suche nach einer der vielen, auf Réunion lebenden, Chamäleonarten. Bei hellem Tageslicht sind sie unglaublich schwer zu finden, aber ein Gärtner kam zu uns und zeigte uns ein Paar Pantherchamäleons, welche er kurz zuvor entdeckt hatte.

Before we started our scuba dive adventure on the island of Réunion, we decided to discover the fauna & flora above water. On one of our first trips we visited a Park, called Jardin d’Eden. It is a beautiful botanical garden exploding with wildlife. Of course we were looking for one of the many chameleon species living on Réunion. In bright daylight they are incredible hard to find, but one gardener came to us and showed us a pair of panther chameleons he found before. One was a male, the other one female.
